Week 3- Refining ideas

Still need to refine ideas. Setting of story, colour, character and animating the scenes to loop. Linking idea to the word Transformation rather than choices. The song is about choices but it is also about transformation. My story is more about the journey and transformation of events. The idea of losing control of your surroundings in a dream.

-Idea of person in a dream-like space. Floating in the air.

-Idea of the setting being in a theme park.

-Was deciding on whether to go with a girl character or guy character

Idea of person in a city. The third scene didn't quite fit in with the other triptychs, so I had to change that.
- thought of maybe having this guy as the main character.
-Use some perspective
-use eagle

Quick Drawings of some character poses that I might use.

Week 2 -Independent

Research and Thumbnails

Researched more into the subject matter I might use in my story and also did some more planning and thumb nailing of the story sequences. I went for stories in a story because it seemed like the best way to interlink the stories but also have a non linear way of viewing the entire story.

I liked the idea of setting the story in a theme park. Just because themeparks usually have a lot of imaginary characters which links to my overall theme of hallucinations and Psychological effects.

My other setting I was considering was a surreal like and dream like setting. Where everything is floating and unrealistic because it links to the idea of dreams.

Also researched more into lucid dreaming and being in the state of controlling your dreams. I thought that maybe I could add this somehow in my story as the character could be at a disadvantage and then takes advantage making the dream a lucid dream. However, This would be more effective if I did a animation, I think.

Week 2- Class Exercise

There was a lecture on Allegory. It did help in terms of powerful images actually having symbolic meaning behind the images which make them more meaningful. Also, that there are multiple meanings and ways that people can interpret the image with. In terms of my own image I do want it to have more meaning behind the image which makes the image more powerful. I guess it did help to start to think more into the types of subject matter I might want in my triptych.

In class I was tasked with choosing a couple of sentences from the song "White Rabbit" and visualizing what the character should look like. After the one on one I think that I still needed to figure out how to convey my concept in a more non linear way.

Drew up two possible symbols, then looked for some imagery on the computer for inspiration on what other subject matter I could use.

Superheroes are considered strong characters that save the day. Could represent Control in a narrative.

Eagles are strong animals that could represent control within a narrative.

A domino affect could be used as a symbol of falling/being let down or Anxiety.
An image of someone actually falling. Sign of anxiety .
being alone and isolated. A sign of running from problems.

Triptych Research

I like the use of colour and also how each scene links to the other.

I like how its the same story but with a different atmosphere.

I like that all the scences interlink with the cord. Also, the minimal colour usage is interesting.

I like that complex story within each piece. Probably would be hard for me to achieve though.

I like the different types of pattern to change each piece.

I like the use of colour and line work.

Concept Development

Thinking of Ideas in relation to the song "White Rabbit"

For the concept for my triptych I was thinking of relating it to the concepts of dreams. The song talks a lot about hallucinations and illusions so I wanted to relate it to that. Maybe in my dream sequence showing fear and the good. I tried to expand it off my original idea of growing up to maybe the fear and the good that the character might feel when growing up.
In relation to the common word of choice, I was thinking of maybe trying the idea of Transformation instead.

"Falling

You're falling, falling, falling... and then you wake up. This is a very common dream and is said to symbolize insecurities and anxiety. Something in your life is essentially out of control and there is nothing you can do to stop it. Another interpretation is that you have a sense of failure about something. Maybe you're not doing well in school or at work and are afraid you're going to be fired or expelled. Again, you feel that you can't control the situation. "

"Being chased

The ever-popular chase dream can be extremely frightening. What it usually symbolizes is that you're running away from your problems. What that problem is depends on who is chasing you. It may be a problem at work, or it may be something about yourself that you know is destructive. For example, you may be drinking too much, and your dream may be telling you that your drinking is becoming a real problem."

"Flying

Many flying dreams are the result of lucid dreaming. Not all flying dreams are, however. Typically, dreaming that you are flying means you are on top of things. You are in control of the things that matter to you. Or, maybe you've just gained a new perspective on things. It may also mean you are strong willed and feel like no one and nothing can defeat you. If you are having problems maintaining your flight, someone or something may be standing in the way of you having control. If you are afraid while flying, you may have challenges that you don't feel up to. "

"Running, but going nowhere

This theme can also be part of the chasing dream. You're trying to run, but either your legs won't move or you simply aren't going anywhere -- as if you were on a treadmill. According to some, this dream means you have too much on your plate. You're trying to do too many things at once and can't catch up or ever get ahead."

In dreams we
-Solve problems--> working through issues in daily life

Psychological state in dreams
-Controlled state- lucid dreams
Symbol:  Flying

-Anxious/insecurities

Visual Style- Examples

Visual Composition and Techniques

found some examples of the types of approaches I was possibly going to try for my Triptych. I was thinking maybe combing the use with traditional drawing and collage, also I was possibly thinking of maybe trying out a set of animated images (not sure). In terms of My ideas I was thinking of making my imagery more surreal as well.

Week 1- Brainstorming ideas for a Triptych narrative

Class Exercise

We brainstormed ideas together in a group and I realized that my story was a bit too generic and didn't have the unique spin that I wanted. After brainstorming some words and researching further into some of the subject matter in the lyrics I found a Idea that I could use to start off my story generating.
We were asked to find a word that all our discussed stories had in common and we found that the word choice was the most common among them all.

I decided to go for the story along the lines of self discovery in life and finding themselves through the different choices that are presented. Maybe in the form of good and bad advice from others.

Brainstormed Ideas on White Rabbit (Trying to brainstorm ways of putting a different spin on the story within the lyrics)

-Protesting and war with the conflict of different opinions
-Drugs and Hallucinations
-Dieting
-Anorexia
-Chasing an illusion
-Peer Pressure
-Choices
-Role models (the good and the bad)
-Possibilities
-Advice from others (one pill makes you more popular and the other one doesn't and nothing seems to change from your mother's advice)
-Own Experiences
-The white rabbit dream reflecting the inner emotions of uncertainty/ the white rabbit is interpreted as a guide showing which path to take (is it good or bad)
-Discovery
-Making decisions
-A dream ( Alice as a doll that a child played with and always talked to, then when she grew older alice was not talked to and she started to make bad decisions?)
-Being Arrested (when the men on the chessboard...)
-Transformation
-decisions
-change

Song Lyrics

"White Rabbit"
Jefferson Airplane

One pill makes you larger                       ---------guitar then with steady with drum tune
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall- Chorus

And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall
Tell 'em a hookah-smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call
Call Alice
When she was just small Chosen Verse

When the men on the chessboard                             ------- Change in pace in song
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know - Chorus

When logic and proportion -Chosen Verse
Have fallen sloppy dead
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's off with her head
Remember what the dormouse said
Feed your head
Feed your head

Initial Thumbnails- Trying out different ideas

Experimentation with the different types of Subject matter, stories and compositions in different songs

I tried out brainstorming some thumbnails for 3 songs that I was thinking of doing. I tried out all three because I wasn't sure which one I wanted to do.

Tried out different compositions for the white rabbit song but I found I was interpreting the song too generically and needed a different spin to make the story more unique.

Tried out some ideas for the Hotel California song which was based around confinement and smoking.

Tried out some ideas for the paparazzi song which I interpreted as stalking and the price of fame.
